Description: Courtesy of: University of Alabama and the Division of Anthropology, American Museum of Natural History Location: St. Catherines Island, GA Survey: Archaeological survey of a Late Archaic (5800-3200 cal B.P.) shell ring site. These Native American structures are hollow, circular middens approximately 40 m in diameter, composed primarily of shellfish and other refuse. Because of historical disturbances, the site has very low topographic relief and is buried beneath a plow zone. GPR was used to image the shape and location of the shell ring for archaeological testing.
